There is so much more to an effective Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategy than keywords. Google looks at a variety of other types of data when determining how high to rank a web page in their search listing. Backlinks are another important piece in any SEO strategy.

01

What Are Backlinks?

Backlinks are not complicated. In its simplest form, they are “links back” to pages on your website. Every time you list your URL somewhere online, you have created a backlink. It is a signpost pointing to your website. Backlinks demonstrate that other entities recognize the existence of your URL.

Although the concept is very simple, the number of backlinks you have to your site is not the goal. Just as Google has begun judging the quality of the content we offer, it also judges the quality of your backlinks.

02

How Does Google Judge the Quality of a Backlink?

The first thing Google looks at is whether a backlink is a do-follow link or a no-follow link.

Do-follow links are the type of backlinks you want. If you have your URL listed on your Instagram or Pinterest accounts, those are do-follow links, but some of the other social media sites only allow no-follow links.

All do-follow links are not equal. Google has determined from your website what type of business you are and what topics are relevant to your site. As its little SEO spider begins crawling around the web looking for your backlinks, it is seeking to determine if your backlinks support the identity it determined from your site. When those backlinks come from a site that has content related to your industry or business Google gives them a thumbs up. If the backlink is on a site that seems to be irrelevant to your website content, Google gives it a thumbs down.

Examples of high-quality backlinks for a home builder would be links on contractor organizations like a builders’ association or a construction safety site. Links on sites like Angie’s List or Houzz would also give strong backlinks to your site.

Why Are Backlinks Important for SEO?

In life, others often judge us by the people with whom we surround ourselves. Google looks at backlinks this way. If they are finding your URL on popular industry sites or attached to articles that speak about subjects also found on your website, it reinforces Google’s interpretation of your identity. It also helps Google to determine where you should rank in relation to your competitors in the Google SERP.

What Is The Importance of Backlinks to User Experience?

Backlinks are important because of their value to Google search results. But, it doesn’t just stop there. Take the responsiveness of your design for example, this doesn’t just refer to a “good looking website”. Instead, it improves your users’ experience and will keep them on your site longer. In the newest google searches, the responsiveness of your website is a factor that will directly influence your SEO efforts.

Now, having a good user experience and combining this with link building, is considered the new way of SEO strategy. Meaning, the importance of backlinks to user experience is that without UX your backlinks are almost useless. Before you start with your SEO and building backlinks and all of that. Focus on your responsiveness and other user experience aspects. This will help optimize the capacity of your backlinks.

Online Business Directories

There are several online directories where your business URL could be listed: Google, Bing, Yelp, Yahoo, Manta, Better Business Bureau, your Chamber of Commerce, Discover Our Town, Alignable, and many others. Some of these sites will list your business at no charge; others may require a membership fee to have your URL listed on their site. If you are targeting your local area, these backlinks can be some of the most important for you to have.

Quora and Other Forums

Answering questions related to your industry on large forum sites like Quora is one easy way to create quality backlinks for your site. Simply answer questions that are relevant to your business and include a link to your website in your answers. It may also gain you traffic from others browsing the forum who are interested in similar topics.

There are forums online for almost every topic. If your business is related to sports, you will find a multitude of forums for every sport out there. Photography, marketing, environmental issues; it’s hard to find a topic without a related forum. Always choose the biggest and the best for your subject to make your backlinks count.

Guest Posts and Podcasts

Just as there are forums on almost every topic, the same is true of blogs and podcasts. Getting your URL listed on popular blogs or podcast pages that relate to topics on your website. It can be fairly easy to get a podcast interview on a new podcast with a small following, but that isn’t what you want. The same is true with guest posts on blogs.

So, how do you find these opportunities? Google is your friend, as always. Search for “guest posts + topic.” You are likely to get a long list of blogs that relate to your topic and offer guest post opportunities.
